Safety is a main priority for most homeowners when planning a pool. While there are code requirements put in place for each state, there are additional safety measures that a homeowner can put in place if wanted.
Pool Code Fencing
Per code, 4’ tall pool fencing with a self closing gate is required for any pool. This is typically used to fence in the pool and the patio area around it. This can also include all or part the yard. There are an assortment of fencing options from powder coated steel, powder coated aluminum, chain link, vinyl coated link, and/or privacy/ solid fencing. This creates a physical barrier to keep out unwanted guests, and control access into the pool area.
Temporary Pool Fencing
There is also temporary pool fencing that can be put up around the pool edge for additional safety precautions. Those with smaller children and/or animals especially like this option since the fencing easily pops into the post holes right around the edge of the pool. This option could be added when fencing in a larger portion of the backyard.
There are two additional pool cover options to add additional safety measures to your outdoor space: custom mesh safety covers and automatic covers.
Custom Mesh Safety Cover (Winter Use)
As the name suggests, custom mesh safety covers are uniquely designed bas ed on the measurements of your pool and anchor into the decking around your pool for a snug fit. The custom safety covers that we use for our clients exceed the specific weight standard (485 lbs) for the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). These covers can support a significant amount of weight and can be walked on. This option is mainly used in the off seasons when the pool is not used, because it requires more effort to put the cover on and attach the straps to the anchors in the decking.
Automatic Cover
An automatic cover is installed during the construction of the pool. (This is important to keep in mind during initial design). The track is placed underneath the coping or on top of the decking depending on preference and budget. This is a great option for those not wanting to have fencing, as the cover meets the code requirements for a barrier. The automatic cover also can hold a significant amount of weight and can be walked on. Additionally, this type of cover can be used year round, since it easily slides into place with a push of a button.
Door/Window Alarms
Doors and windows that open up directly into the fenced pool area are required alarms that beep when opened. This is a code requirement. Some home security systems provide this service or you can pick up wireless alarms at stores like Home Depot, Walmart, Lowes.
Floating Pool Alarms
For added protection, a homeowner can opt for an alarm device that floats in the water. This alarm system will beep and alert if there is any motion detected in the pool. The sensitivity of the detection can be adjusted to the homeowners needs.
